WHAT IS THE KAMENGE YOUTH CENTER ?

The Kamenge Youth Centre (KYC) is based in one of the worst war-affected part of the Burundian capital Bujumbura. In November 2000, it had 16 500 male and female members of all ethnic and social origins. The Youth Centre gives the opportunity to its members to take part in all kinds of activities (sports, culture, religion, teaching, etc.). We believe that this sharing allows for the development of attitudes of peace, reconciliation and dialogue.

WHERE IS THE KAMENGE YOUTH CENTER ?
The Kamenge area is the name given to the different neighborourhoods of the northern part of the capital . It is a strong symbol in the ongoing Burundian civil strife. During the 1994 crises, Kamenge was strongly affected by the conflict. The area was destroyed and ethnic division arose amongst its people. As a suburb of the capital, the people of Kamenge also experience exclusion from the population of the centre.
The area is composed of six neighbourhoods : Ngagara, Kamenge, Cibitoke, Buterere, Gihosha, Kinama. The KYC is located at the crossing of these neighbourhoods. In its location and activities, the KYC aims at promoting peace and reconciliation amongst the population of the northern part of Bujumbura
